La Ventana Natural Arch
The beautiful La Ventana Natural Arch is located within a section of El Malpais National Conservation Area. This is one of the largest natural arches in the state of New Mexico.
La Ventana Natural Arch sits in El Malpais National Monument, a large wilderness area south of Interstate 40. This area was established to protect its geological, archeological, cultural, and wilderness features. There are various trails for hiking in the area as well as lava tubes and caves. Cave exploring is done by permit only. You can find more information at the El Malpais welcome center near Grants.
We stopped to check out this beautiful arch on a day trip loop from Albuquerque that also included our Pie Town Sidetrack and The Very Large Array (VLA) Sidetrack. The signs for the arch were easy to follow from NM 117. There is a parking area, but no restrooms or water. We took a short .25 mile walk along the paved path to a nice vantage point where you can see the arch in all of its glory.
While it may not be worth a drive in itself, combined en route to a destination, La Ventana Natural Arch is worth a stop! We would like to return to the area as there are many additional lava fields, bluffs, and caves to explore!
